Hastings Guesthouses - Luxury hotels, friendly bed and breakfasts or economical campsites. I started this site a short time ago, primarily for listing guesthouses and hotels in the Hastings and St Leonards area, of which you can view some information below. In addition to that, I have now decided to include the county of East Sussex as well, I hope you find the listingsof use in your travels.
If you're looking for a place to stay for a night or more, there is something for every taste and budget in St Leonards on Sea, Hastings and the rest of East Sussex, for more information Hastings, see the Visit Hastings site for details of places to stay and things to do, there is also a lot more information on the councils Leisure and Tourism pages.
St Leonards On Sea is part of Hastings, East Sussex, lying just to the west of the town centre. The original part of the St Leonards settlement, known as, Burton St Leonards, was laid out in the early 19th century as a new town, after large parts of the land were bought by a very well known architect of the day called, James Burton (1761-1837). It was a new town of elegant houses designed for the rich people of the day, it included a central public garden, a hotel, assembly rooms, an archery and a church. After his death, his son, Decimus Burton (1800-1881), started phase 2 of the building project, today, St Leonards has extended well beyond that original design, although the original town of Burton St Leonards still exists within it, with a lot of the original buildings still very much intact and in daily use, see photos and more details about the buildings on the Burtons' St Leonards Society site.
Hastings is one of the only places outside the Isle of Wight, where Dinosaur bones can be found below the cliffs and along the foreshore. This very popular and important site has yielded some important finds over the years, including the bones of dinosaurs, sharks, fish and plantlife including a fossilised forest just along the beach at Bulverhythe, fossils and shells can also be collected by anyone, and remember to Keep a look out for the footprints of dinosaurs.
If you choose this area for a day trip, a weekend break, or a longer holiday, you will never be short of things to do, whether you want to lie on the beach and top up your tan, visit museums, galleries, castles, country houses or beautiful landscaped parks and gardens, all of these things are right on our doorstep, just to give you an idea of some local attractions, you can visit places like Pevensey Castle, Battle Abbey and 1066 Battlefield, Rye & Camber, Bexhill, Herstmonceux Castle, Hastings Country Park, to name but a few, and there is plenty more to do besides, for example, Hastings History, all in all, this makes Hastings and St Leonards On Sea two of the best places to come and stay at, no matter what your interests.
To see more photos of places in the surrounding area which I have taken, you can visit my www.z1285.info Photo Gallery website, I will be adding more photos as and when I get a chance to take them.
The Hastings of today is primarily a seaside resort which was started in the 19th century, and still holds much of the charm from those days, which can be clearly seen in the old town between East and West hills, just to the east of the modern town centre, there are medieval buildings and churches. The old harbour has haunting looking black wooden net huts around it, along with a fishermen's museum, there are 5 miles of shingle beaches below the cliffs, and the town has all of the modern amenities usually found in decent seaside resorts, you can take take a ride on the cliff railway funicular, and once at the top of the cliffs, the far reaching views are second to none, whilst on top of the cliffs, you can go inside the ruins of Hastings Castle.
Hastings was one of the original Cinque Ports, but due a the lack of any sort of natural harbour, this led to a decline in it's use as a port in days gone by, but from that, there grew a rise in the fishing industry, Hastings is now well known as the place with the largest beach launched fishing fleet in Europe, this fleet has decline a bit in the modern age due to tourism, but still, it remains Europe's largest, and recently won accreditation for its use of sustainable fishing methods.
